There is a time when team sports for kids are counterproductive and parents need to think long and hard if their child's participation in a sport really is a wise choice. For example, if your child is a toddler and loves to run and hide, this makes for a great fitness game involving balls and buckets.

The goal would be to hide the balls under the buckets within a specified period of time. To make this an activity that is centered on a preference for playing with balls simply seek to increase the level of difficulty by requiring the balls to be balanced on top of the buckets.

Games such as these can be found online at most of the major parenting magazine sites, or you may contact your child's physical education teacher for some input and suggestions.

When it comes to helping our children gain interest in exercise, we have to show them that it can be fun. Get creative with your kids exercises. Plan a hike to a local nature site and create a type of scavenger hunt. Spot two butterflies and one bumble bee. Look for a feather or animal track.

This can keep kids busy thinking while their bodies is moving. Another fun kid friendly exercise is an obstacle course. Create an area to race through, a tunnel to crawl through and something to leap over.

Add a bunny hop or two and finish it off with a crab walk. Kids will be giggling away while they strengthen their hearts and bodies. Play a game of horse with your kids and see who can make the most shots and the most misses.

Swimming, bike riding and jump roping are all classic childhood activities that we often do not consider exercise. The fact is if your heart rate picks up and you breath a bit harder it can be called exercise.

Take your kids to a local park or run a fitness course. Kids love to try and beat mom or dad at an activity, so make it fun. Get your whole family involved for a great time.

Ask your kids what they would enjoy; you may find that they have some great ideas. Go play a game of Frisbee golf on a sunny day or toss a ball in the back yard. No matter what you do, make it safe and fun for a great day of healthy activity.

Springtime is around the corner and the kids are itching to get outside. Cabin fever has got the best of them and you need a cure. Spring brings warmer weather and sunnier skies for more outdoor activities. It can still be chilly out so activities for kids that can be wrapped up quickly are key.

Take a Frisbee, a ball and glove or a kite to your local park. These are fun outdoor activities that are healthy for your kids and can be scooped up if an April shower should appear. Let your kids break out their bicycle or scooter for a ride around the block. Exercise is important for us all but building a love of fitness and exercise is key when our children are young.

We see the rise in childhood obesity and obesity related illnesses in children. Our schools are beginning to make healthier choices for our children’s lunches and exercise facilities for children such as activities for kids are becoming more and more popular. Kids have so many opportunities to move their bodies through dance, karate, gymnastics and more. You don’t have to wait for spring to get the kids moving around.

You can find new activities and exercises for your children by searching online or at your library. There are books, videos and magazines devoted to kid friendly fitness. We have to do our part to help our kids live healthy active lifestyles that will lead to long healthy lives in adulthood. You don’t have to pay as lot of money or sign up to be a part of a kids club, simply get your kids moving and you’ll both have fun and become healthier for it.

Children of all ages should get a minimum of an hour of exercise per day. They shouldn’t perform exercises that are adult oriented like walking on a treadmill or lifting weights at the gym. Instead children should perform exercises that are suited for their age and skill level.

A child ages three and four can perform tumbling classes and play games that allows them to jump and dance. Children who are ages five and six can perform basic gymnastic moves such as walking on a balance beam and performing cartwheels. Children six through eight and seven through thirteen can build up towards gymnastic equipment such as the rings or bars.

Beyond gymnastics children can participate in age appropriate sports such as soccer, baseball and cheerleading. Any activity that is safe and fun that gets your kids moving their bodies for energy exertion and building their hearts strength is great.

Children also need to understand that exercise is important and that it is fun. Following activities that are age appropriate allow children to enjoy themselves in an activity that they can do so they do not get frustrated and they build self-esteem.

If you are interested in finding new exercises or activities for kids you can find videos, classes like those at my gym and books on age appropriate exercise and activities. You will find that you can do toddler yoga with your daughter and some silly dance moves with your son. Children love to move and laugh and they won’t even realize that its real exercise.

Every parents wants healthy children, but sometimes keeping up with their activities can be hard work. When you've been working hard all day, you'll often find that you just don't have the energy to keep up with active, enthusiastic kids. You may not feel that it's safe to let them play outside on their own. For the busy parent who can't afford to enroll kids in formal sporting classes, children's exercise groups can make all the difference.

Children's exercise groups are easy to organize. If you don't know enough other parents with kids of a similar age to yours, try putting a notice up at the local school and getting together a group that way. Even if you have just five participating adults, that's one for each day of the week.

You don't need any special skills, just enthusiasm for sport or active games - if you're not sure what to do to keep the kids happy, ask them for their input. In most clubs of this sort, the adults quickly find that their varying interests and abilities means the kids have something different to do each night of the week.

Exercise clubs are exciting for kids and provide them with social opportunities as well as keeping them fit. They don't need to be as strongly goal-orientated as more formal groups and they can leave plenty of room for creative play. When you participate in an exercise club you'll find that you've a lot on your hands one day a week, but the rest of the week you'll have time to yourself when you can really relax and do your own thing - knowing that, in the meantime, your kids are keeping fit and having a great time.

Exercise groups can be organized practically anywhere that there's room to play, so start talking to your friends and neighbors and see if you can come up with a system that makes your lives easier whilst putting fun and fitness first for your kids.

Some forms of children's exercise never seem to go out of fashion. Amongst girls, nothing beats the enduring popularity of skipping, even if it may look a bit different from the way it did when you were a child.

Many women can remember the day they were given their first skipping rope. Practicing at home is a great way to build up coordination and timing as well as improving reflexes. It strengthens the calf muscles, keeps the knees in good shape and provides excellent aerobic exercise, helping to develop a healthy heart and lungs. Children don't tend to see skipping as exercise - it's a game, a fun thing to do alone or with friends - but it'll get them in good shape for other kinds of sport.

Modern skipping equipment looks quite different from the old stuff and can be a good way to get kids interested. Skipping ropes now come in a range of bright colors, including twisted rainbow shades, and many have handles which glow or flash when the rope is used. Consult your child to make sure you get something appropriately fashionable.

An impressive skipping rope will be taken to school to be used in multiple player games, encouraging still more kids to get involved. It can help to make your child popular in the playground as well as providing valuable children's exercise.

Skipping may seem old fashioned, but the simple toys are often the best. It can be a particularly effective way to encourage girls to get physical because it won't conflict with their desire to be seen as appropriately feminine.

Many girls are reluctant to join in popular sports, but skipping will suit their image of themselves and will help them to stay in shape. It's fashionable with everyone from pop stars to movie idols, so make sure they don't miss out. A skipping rope costs very little but it can make a big difference to your child's life.

It's easy to let kids get away with things. We all have a tendency to spoil our children - to let them lie that little bit longer in bed, to feed them more treats than we really think they should have, and to accept their excuses when we know the real reason they don't want to exercise is simply that they don't want to make the effort.

It's easy to indulge them like this because we can relate to the desire to be lazy and to overeat, but part of the reason we feel that desire is that we're not in perfect condition ourselves.

If we'd been more active as children, we'd find it easy to get out of bed in the mornings feeling bright and alert. We'd enjoy healthy foods and physical work would leave us feeling good. If this seems like wishful thinking, bear in mind that it has a strong scientific basis. fitness for kids provides fitness for life.

We now know that good health in childhood can have major effects on the way our bodies develop as we get older - even if we're not able to keep up that level of exercise in later life. People who are healthy as children generally stay slimmer as adults and have a reduced risk of metabolic conditions like diabetes. They're less likely to suffer from heart problems or respiratory problems, and even some cancers are significantly rarer. Overall, they can live five to ten years longer.

Fitness for kids encourages good habits and also helps to develop a metabolism which is geared toward activity, helping people who enjoy exercise in childhood to remain active for a larger proportion of their lives.

There are lots of things we can do to improve our health as adults, but we'll never have the advantages we could enjoy if we'd exercised more and eaten better when we were children. Still, whilst we're unable to change this for ourselves, we can make things better for the next generation.

Naturally we want the best for our children, but we need to understand that indulging them in the short term might not be the most appropriate solution. Encouraging them to be active, even if they sulk a bit at the time, will give them gifts they'll be very grateful for in later life.

Are you having difficulty getting your child to exercise? A lot of children love the sporting look but don't want to make the effort to get involved in active pursuits. One way to help improve fitness for kids can be to encourage them to develop their look. If they're going to have the clothes, they ought to try and make a good impression on them.

Adults tend to think of fashion as something which only becomes important during the teenage years, but young children are highly conscious of what they wear and the impression it makes. Sport-style clothing is very popular and having the latest such clothing - and especially footwear - is important in making an impression on other kids. Often these clothes are expensive and children will beg to get them.

Encourage your kids to prove how much they need sporting clothes by demonstrating that they have a real use for them. If they want running shoes, they can earn them by taking up running-based activities. This will help them to develop a positive work ethic at the same time as improving their health.

Fitness for kids is, ultimately, all about helping them to grow up with healthy bodies, but when they're young they won't value health as much as appearance. Connecting the two makes it easier for them to make healthy choices. What's more, a pair of running shoes which has been earned will always be treasured more than a gift. Children will know that their fashionable sporting clothes reflect their own achievements.

Pride in these achievements will ensure that they feel confident whenever they're wearing their new gear. They'll also look a lot more impressive if they're the right shape for the body-conscious clothes they're dressing up in. Flabby, overweight kids in sporting gear will only be a subject of ridicule. Don't just give them what they want to wear - help them to wear it well.

Keeping fit through walking is something we tend to associate with elderly people and invalids who don't have many other options. It may sound odd to suggest that walking can be a good form of children's exercise, but that's part of why it matters - because it shouldn't seem like exercise, it should become a part of day to day life.

Most people take up exercise routines at some point in life, and most people break them. It can be hard to stick to a routine when going through changes in life, hard to find time for a structured exercise session within a busy schedule. Walking is something we can do all the time. We may be able to walk to and from school or work; or walk to the shops; or take a stroll on a quiet day to enjoy some fresh air.

But most of us rarely do these things. We get used to using cars when we're children and we stick with them all our lives, using our legs as little as possible. This is one of the leading causes of ill health and obesity. We're simply not using our bodies the way we're meant to.

Getting into the habit of walking when young is a great way to establish healthy life patterns which will stick. But walking for children isn't the same as it is for adults. Simply being smaller, children have to work a lot harder to keep up. This means that, for young children, walking can be quite an energetic form of exercise. For this reason you should plan walks to include rest stops, giving your children a chance to recover and making sure that they don't find the experience unpleasant. Let them set the pace.

Walking is an ideal form of children's exercise because it keeps them it whilst getting them into good habits. It's also something you can do together, giving you quality time in which to bond with your child.

If there's one activity which young children can be guaranteed to enjoy, it's bouncing. With naturally flexible bodies and springy muscles, they like nothing more than to leap up and down when they're excited - but we adults, in our endlessly confusing way, are always telling them to stop. Don't bounce on the couch or on your bed - you might break it! Don't bounce in the kitchen when I'm trying to cook!

Don't bounce in puddles! It's a confusing message because it seems to them that they're being told not to be physical - when, at the same time, we claim we want them to be fit.

Letting kids get fit by doing what's natural for them doesn't have to mean letting them break every piece of furniture in the house or soak you whenever it's raining. If you take your children to a gymnasium, or even to a fete, you may well find opportunities for them to bounce in an environment designed for the purpose.

Inflatable castles are always the most popular thing at the funfair and they enhance fitness for kids at the same time as tiring them out, making life easier for their parents. Trampolines, if properly supervised, can also provide a great outlet for all that youthful energy. And trampolines don't have to be just for the gym.

Because manufacturers understand how bouncing can help with fitness for kids, it's now possible to get miniature trampolines which can be used in your own back garden,or even in a high ceilinged room in your house. With specially covered springs, these trampolines are much safer for children and provide an excellent way for them to use up excess energy.

Encourage them to bring friends round to join in so that they don't get bored of playing with it, and the trampoline will become a favorite toy which will enjoy many years of use. It'll help your kids to get fit on their own terms, in a way which never ceases to be fun.

If you're the sort of person who wants to get your kids fit for the sake of their futures, the chances are that you're concerned about other people's well-being too. If you'd like to raise your kids to be the sort of people who support good causes, there are ways you can go about that and boost their health at the same time.

Kids like to be involved with good causes because it gives them a sense of usefulness in the wider world. It allows them to take on responsibility in a completely safe way. Undertaking challenges for charity also appeals to their natural competitive instincts, even if the only people they're competing against are themselves.

Kid's fitness events for charity are easy to organize and can be tailored to suit your children's interests. Some kids like to see how many times they can bounce up and down on a trampoline, whilst others may want to see how far they can run or swim. Make sure you have reliable people on hand to help them count.

These activities are even more popular if you can persuade kids to undertake them in groups. You'll fined lots of charities online and listed in your local telephone directory who can help you to plan your event and can organize the collection of money your kids make.

This can be collected by visiting friends and neighbors and getting them to agree to sponsoring the kids per jump, per lap of the running track, etc. Knowing they'll make more money of they do more work will encourage your children to push their limits.

Charity events are not only a good thing in themselves, they also inspire practice and training, potentially helping with fitness for kids over the course of several weeks. Help your children to help themselves by helping others, and everyone wins.

Everyone knows that looking after kids is hard work, and often parents feel grateful when their children confess that they're feeling tired and can be sent to bed. To adults, trying to get important things done, children can seem as if they have far too much energy already, never mind trying to get them fitter. But in this situation, properly organized children's exercise is sometimes exactly what's needed.

Children get more excitable than adults because their growing bodies metabolize their food differently, and because many foods aimed at kids are high in sugar content. Children also don't have the same number of daily tasks to tire them out as adults do, and they're not mentally equipped to occupy themselves that way. What they need is physical activity, and lots of it.

They'll instinctively try to get this any way they can, which means running around the house and shouting if they can't find any other outlet. When this happens, simply telling them to sit and be quiet is not a good solution. ~it can be bad for their health, and it can lead to serious stress.

What children need is well planned regular exercise, ideally in the form of activities they're going to enjoy. School sports can help with this, as can active pursuits run by youth organizations. If you need to organize children's exercise yourself, set them tasks to do like running errands on their feet or on bikes.

Encourage them to take up activities such as dancing to their favorite music in their bedrooms. You can even get involved directly by taking the time to play with them with a ball in the back yard. It doesn't have to take up an enormous amount if time, and though children will always burn off more energy doing this sort of thing than adults do, it might even get you fitter yourself!

Everybody knows that Children's fitness is important, but making sure your kids get the exercise they need can be easier said than done. It's all very well if you live in a good area with good quality local sports facilities, or even a decent sized back yard where they can play with their friends - but what if you live downtown and are uncomfortable about letting them play outside?

What if they have pollen allergies and outdoor play makes them ill? What if you simply don't get the weather for it? Fortunately, there are several indoor activities which can help with fitness for kids, and which can be fun at the same time.

When exercising indoors, staircases are your friend. Even communal stone staircases can help, though in those cases it's a good idea for young children to have an adult present in case they fall. Climbing up and down steps provides light impact exercise which helps to build strong bones, as well as exercising the heart and lungs and strengthening the muscles in the backs of the legs.

The safest way to exercise on staircases is to walk down them and then race upwards, competing with other children or trying to beat a set time. Even slow stair climbing, if undertaken regularly, will improve fitness for kids. This is also a great way to tire them out and keep them from tiring you out when you're trying to get on with the housework.

Jumping and stretching exercises can be performed anywhere, even if you only have a small amount of space. Kids find these more satisfying if they get to perform them in unison with their favorite music, with or without the aid of dance mat technology. They also respond well to challenges - try betting them that they can't manage a certain number of star jumps, and let them try to prove you wrong.

If you have a bit more space, forward and backward rolls are an activity which kids always enjoy. These help to keep joints flexible as well as improving balance. Encourage your kids to combine them with stretches and jumps to create routines. These can easily be built into games.


Fitness for kids doesn't have to be the preserve of those who already enjoy advantages in life. Don't let circumstances deter you from keeping your children healthy, because that's the very best advantage you can give them in life.
