We as Americans have seen an alarming rise in childhood obesity levels. As our nation grows into a more sedentary lifestyle and our diets are packed with high calorie, high fat foods it should be no surprise.

There is a time when team sports for kids are counterproductive and parents need to think long and hard if their child's participation in a sport really is a wise choice. In such cases the time commitment is so excessive that it makes normal school work and even just fun time at home with family, siblings and friends impossible.

Such team sports for kids are usually started when they are very young and although it may serve to make the experience normal for the child and even fort he family, it is a far cry from the need for play childhood demands as the norm.

Offer a child a bag of chips and a video game controller, and the odds he or she will most likely obediently take them and put them to use. Offer little else, and the odds are good that you have just set up a child on a course of choices that will have a far reaching impact over the course of her or his life.

As a matter of fact, there is a chance that these early moments of conditioning will be replayed time and again when the growing child makes other choices as well. There are so many healthy and fun outside activities for kids that it is surprising not more children are participating in them. Jumping with a rope, playing with a hoop, kicking the soccer ball or shooting some baskets, there is precious little that cannot add up to fun when combining a ball and the great outdoors.

Sadly, so many of these healthy and fun outside activities for kids are not undertaken, even if there is a yard or park available. At times the controller for the video game seems to offer more enjoyment than playing in the yard, while at other times it is the hefty school and extracurricular schedule that makes such activities virtually impossible for a child to experience.

Birthday parties are no only about playing games and eating cake anymore. The longer the party lasts, the more likely that it is that you will need to serve a meal as well. Finger foods are often the easiest to make and certainly to clean up after the party.

To really make it a great party with great food, try using bright colors. If the foods are bland, then the children will be less likely to eat them. Just a few drops of food coloring can draw the attention of the kids. Having purple cheese on their pizza or green ham on their finger sandwiches can be fun for little children.

If you plan to provide juices for the drinks buy something that is green or blue, as everyone knows blue foods always taste better. Cut sandwiches into different shapes or shapes that are associated with the theme that you have devised for the party.

Birthdays are always special events for children. Making each one a lasting memory that they enjoy, is something to strive for when planning. An important step when planning an outdoor party is to be prepared for all types of weather. Childhood obesity is on the rise in the United States and there is frighteningly no sign of slowing. Children in today's day and age are surrounded with animated toys, video games and computer activities that keep them sedentary for most of their day.

Schools across the nation are creating budget cuts that threaten to remove recess and possibly gym classes. The American diet is packed full of processed foods that offer high calories and high fat with little nutritional value.

As children grow at a rapid pace a poor diet and excess weight can cause abnormalities in bone structure along with premature joint pain and wear. This is why we must take a stand against childhood obesity and focus on prevention as well as treatment.

As a concerned parent, you know that fitness games for kids are an important part of growing up healthy. The weather is warmer and it's time to enjoy the great outdoors again. The kids are bursting to be outside in the sunlight so get moving. Take a walk to the park and climb on the jungle gym or race across the monkey bars.

Strap on some roller blades or hop on a bicycle. These are great springtime activities for you and your kids. Begin planning some fun activities to get the whole family moving. It's normal to remain indoors for longer periods of time in the winter. We are often performing sedentary activities like video games, surfing on the computer or zoning out on some videos on the couch.

When spring comes we are able to get out and begin doing the activities that we weren't able to in the cold. If your kids aren't quite ready to give up the video games break them in easy with only an hour a day of outdoor activity.

When it comes to helping our children gain interest in exercise, we have to show them that it can be fun. Get creative with your kids exercises. Plan a hike to a local nature site and create a type of scavenger hunt. Spot two butterflies and one bumble bee. Look for a feather or animal track.

This can keep kids busy thinking while their bodies is moving. Another fun kid friendly exercise is an obstacle course. Create an area to race through, a tunnel to crawl through and something to leap over.

Add a bunny hop or two and finish it off with a crab walk. Kids will be giggling away while they strengthen their hearts and bodies. Play a game of horse with your kids and see who can make the most shots and the most misses.

Swimming, bike riding and jump roping are all classic childhood activities that we often do not consider exercise. The fact is if your heart rate picks up and you breath a bit harder it can be called exercise.

Take your kids to a local park or run a fitness course. Kids love to try and beat mom or dad at an activity, so make it fun. Get your whole family involved for a great time.

Ask your kids what they would enjoy; you may find that they have some great ideas. Go play a game of Frisbee golf on a sunny day or toss a ball in the back yard. No matter what you do, make it safe and fun for a great day of healthy activity.

Springtime is around the corner and the kids are itching to get outside. Cabin fever has got the best of them and you need a cure. Spring brings warmer weather and sunnier skies for more outdoor activities. It can still be chilly out so activities for kids that can be wrapped up quickly are key.

Children of all ages should get a minimum of an hour of exercise per day. They shouldn’t perform exercises that are adult oriented like walking on a treadmill or lifting weights at the gym. Instead children should perform exercises that are suited for their age and skill level.

A child ages three and four can perform tumbling classes and play games that allows them to jump and dance. Children who are ages five and six can perform basic gymnastic moves such as walking on a balance beam and performing cartwheels. Children six through eight and seven through thirteen can build up towards gymnastic equipment such as the rings or bars.

Beyond gymnastics children can participate in age appropriate sports such as soccer, baseball and cheerleading. Any activity that is safe and fun that gets your kids moving their bodies for energy exertion and building their hearts strength is great.

Keeping kids busy is always hard work, especially when they're young and need to be supervised all the time. As they get older, it can be good to plan activities for kids which teach them how to do things by themselves. Making a scrapbook is an excellent way for a child to learn research skills and discover the pleasures of acquiring knowledge for its own sake. It helps children to develop their independent interests, and when they compare their scrapbooks they can educate each other.

The first thing to do when planning a scrapbook is to choose a theme. Popular themes include the family, nature, cars, dinosaurs and fairies. Try to settle on something in which your child has demonstrated a lasting interest, rather than just the latest fad. Then sit down together and discuss the sorts of places where they might be able to find out things about their subject. Perhaps there are pictures and articles they can print from the internet.

Perhaps they can (with permission!) cut our items from newspapers and magazines. There might be things in the local library which they could photocopy. Trips to museums can also be a good way to gather information. Writing letters to adult experts can be a good way to develop children's confidence, and it can yield great results.

As items are collected, they can be preserved by pasting them into a large sturdy scrapbook. Encourage your child to add notes identifying where each item came from and when it was found. If they have no illustrations for particular items, your children may want to add their own pictures. Scrapbooks can also contain other suitable objects, such as dried leaves in a nature collection or the handprints of family members.

Keeping a scrapbook is one of those great activities for kids which will keep them busy for days whilst helping them to develop valuable skills. It'll also lead to the creation of something which you can enjoy looking at years after they've grown.

Every parents wants healthy children, but sometimes keeping up with their activities can be hard work. When you've been working hard all day, you'll often find that you just don't have the energy to keep up with active, enthusiastic kids. You may not feel that it's safe to let them play outside on their own. For the busy parent who can't afford to enroll kids in formal sporting classes, children's exercise groups can make all the difference.

Children's exercise groups are easy to organize. If you don't know enough other parents with kids of a similar age to yours, try putting a notice up at the local school and getting together a group that way. Even if you have just five participating adults, that's one for each day of the week.

You don't need any special skills, just enthusiasm for sport or active games - if you're not sure what to do to keep the kids happy, ask them for their input. In most clubs of this sort, the adults quickly find that their varying interests and abilities means the kids have something different to do each night of the week.

Exercise clubs are exciting for kids and provide them with social opportunities as well as keeping them fit. They don't need to be as strongly goal-orientated as more formal groups and they can leave plenty of room for creative play. When you participate in an exercise club you'll find that you've a lot on your hands one day a week, but the rest of the week you'll have time to yourself when you can really relax and do your own thing - knowing that, in the meantime, your kids are keeping fit and having a great time.

Exercise groups can be organized practically anywhere that there's room to play, so start talking to your friends and neighbors and see if you can come up with a system that makes your lives easier whilst putting fun and fitness first for your kids.

Some forms of children's exercise never seem to go out of fashion. Amongst girls, nothing beats the enduring popularity of skipping, even if it may look a bit different from the way it did when you were a child.

Many women can remember the day they were given their first skipping rope. Practicing at home is a great way to build up coordination and timing as well as improving reflexes. It strengthens the calf muscles, keeps the knees in good shape and provides excellent aerobic exercise, helping to develop a healthy heart and lungs. Children don't tend to see skipping as exercise - it's a game, a fun thing to do alone or with friends - but it'll get them in good shape for other kinds of sport.

Modern skipping equipment looks quite different from the old stuff and can be a good way to get kids interested. Skipping ropes now come in a range of bright colors, including twisted rainbow shades, and many have handles which glow or flash when the rope is used. Consult your child to make sure you get something appropriately fashionable.

An impressive skipping rope will be taken to school to be used in multiple player games, encouraging still more kids to get involved. It can help to make your child popular in the playground as well as providing valuable children's exercise.

Skipping may seem old fashioned, but the simple toys are often the best. It can be a particularly effective way to encourage girls to get physical because it won't conflict with their desire to be seen as appropriately feminine.

Many girls are reluctant to join in popular sports, but skipping will suit their image of themselves and will help them to stay in shape. It's easy to let kids get away with things. We all have a tendency to spoil our children - to let them lie that little bit longer in bed, to feed them more treats than we really think they should have, and to accept their excuses when we know the real reason they don't want to exercise is simply that they don't want to make the effort.

It's easy to indulge them like this because we can relate to the desire to be lazy and to overeat, but part of the reason we feel that desire is that we're not in perfect condition ourselves.

If we'd been more active as children, we'd find it easy to get out of bed in the mornings feeling bright and alert. We'd enjoy healthy foods and physical work would leave us feeling good. If this seems like wishful thinking, bear in mind that it has a strong scientific basis. fitness for kids provides fitness for life.

We now know that good health in childhood can have major effects on the way our bodies develop as we get older - even if we're not able to keep up that level of exercise in later life. People who are healthy as children generally stay slimmer as adults and have a reduced risk of metabolic conditions like diabetes. They're less likely to suffer from heart problems or respiratory problems, and even some cancers are significantly rarer. Overall, they can live five to ten years longer.

Fitness for kids encourages good habits and also helps to develop a metabolism which is geared toward activity, helping people who enjoy exercise in childhood to remain active for a larger proportion of their lives.

There are lots of things we can do to improve our health as adults, but we'll never have the advantages we could enjoy if we'd exercised more and eaten better when we were children. Still, whilst we're unable to change this for ourselves, we can make things better for the next generation.

Naturally we want the best for our children, but we need to understand that indulging them in the short term might not be the most appropriate solution. Encouraging them to be active, even if they sulk a bit at the time, will give them gifts they'll be very grateful for in later life.

Are you having difficulty getting your child to exercise? A lot of children love the sporting look but don't want to make the effort to get involved in active pursuits. One way to help improve fitness for kids can be to encourage them to develop their look. If they're going to have the clothes, they ought to try and make a good impression on them.

Adults tend to think of fashion as something which only becomes important during the teenage years, but young children are highly conscious of what they wear and the impression it makes. Sport-style clothing is very popular and having the latest such clothing - and especially footwear - is important in making an impression on other kids. Often these clothes are expensive and children will beg to get them.

Encourage your kids to prove how much they need sporting clothes by demonstrating that they have a real use for them. If they want running shoes, they can earn them by taking up running-based activities. This will help them to develop a positive work ethic at the same time as improving their health.

Fitness for kids is, ultimately, all about helping them to grow up with healthy bodies, but when they're young they won't value health as much as appearance. Connecting the two makes it easier for them to make healthy choices. What's more, a pair of running shoes which has been earned will always be treasured more than a gift. Children will know that their fashionable sporting clothes reflect their own achievements.

Pride in these achievements will ensure that they feel confident whenever they're wearing their new gear. They'll also look a lot more impressive if they're the right shape for the body-conscious clothes they're dressing up in. Flabby, overweight kids in sporting gear will only be a subject of ridicule. Don't just give them what they want to wear - help them to wear it well.

Children are always excited by the festive season. There are presents to look forward to, and visiting relatives, and everybody (on the surface at least) is in a good mood. But this excitement can lead to trouble. If there's fierce winter weather outside, your kids may have nowhere to run around and burn off their excess energy.

They may end up being just another source of stress when you've already got far too much to deal with. Here are some simple seasonal games you can get your kids playing to keep them happy no matter what the weather's like.

1. Patchwork Elephants. This is a great way to use up old scraps of wrapping paper. Start by drawing the outline of an elephant, as big as possible, on a plain sheet of paper. Then cut shapes from different pieces of paper and glue them on to make a colorful body. Remember to give him distinct ears, tusks and eyes, as well as a long wiggly trunk.

2. Mini Snow Sculptures. When the now is too deep, or it's just too cols, for playing outside, why not bring a bit of snow into the house? Kept in a plastic container such a washbasin, it'll take a surprisingly long time to melt, and in the meantime you can build miniature snowmen and igloos out of it - or whatever takes your fancy!

3. For the Birds. Encourage your children to think about how birds live in winter, what it's like for them and what they need. Books and the internet can help with this. They can make up a special seasonal food mixture for the birds using kitchen leftovers, nuts, seeds and raisins.

4. Santa's Sleigh. Draw a Christmas sleight, then get each child in turn to name an item which might be given as a present. The next child has to draw that item so that it balances on the sleigh. Challenge your kids to see how much Santa's sleigh can carry in one go.

With all these activities for kids keeping them busy, your only worry will be getting them to go to sleep at night whilst they wait for their presents to arrive.

Keeping fit through walking is something we tend to associate with elderly people and invalids who don't have many other options. It may sound odd to suggest that walking can be a good form of children's exercise, but that's part of why it matters - because it shouldn't seem like exercise, it should become a part of day to day life.

Most people take up exercise routines at some point in life, and most people break them. It can be hard to stick to a routine when going through changes in life, hard to find time for a structured exercise session within a busy schedule. Walking is something we can do all the time. We may be able to walk to and from school or work; or walk to the shops; or take a stroll on a quiet day to enjoy some fresh air.

But most of us rarely do these things. We get used to using cars when we're children and we stick with them all our lives, using our legs as little as possible. This is one of the leading causes of ill health and obesity. We're simply not using our bodies the way we're meant to.

Getting into the habit of walking when young is a great way to establish healthy life patterns which will stick. But walking for children isn't the same as it is for adults. Simply being smaller, children have to work a lot harder to keep up. This means that, for young children, walking can be quite an energetic form of exercise. For this reason you should plan walks to include rest stops, giving your children a chance to recover and making sure that they don't find the experience unpleasant. Let them set the pace.

Walking is an ideal form of children's exercise because it keeps them it whilst getting them into good habits. It's also something you can do together, giving you quality time in which to bond with your child.

Adult exercise and children's exercise are two different things. Adults can enjoy running, swimming or working out for its own sake. Children need a reason (competing for a prize, beating a record, etc.) or they need the activity itself to be fun. It's hard for them to focus on long term goals such as losing weight or reducing the chance of a heart attack in forty years' time. They need to be motivated by the prospect of an immediate reward - or, still better, by the fact that the exercise they're doing is fun at the time.

There are many different fads in children's exercise. Some of these last only for a season, and some come and go, experiencing a new burst of popularity with each generation. One form of exercise which has undying appeal is hula dancing. It' something even small children can learn to do well, and it's lots of fun.

Modern hula hoops come in a wide range of colors and patterns. Some are day-glo and some even have flashing lights. Make sure you find one which will appeal to your child's taste. You should also make sure you purchase one of the appropriate size - smaller versions are available for young children. It's easiest if you also have one you can use yourself so you can show your child how it's done. Don't worry if you're not very good at it - your child will be thrilled to find an activity at which they can out-do you.

Traditional challenges involving hula hoops include how many times one can swing the body to keep the hoop moving (without dropping it), how long one can keep it moving for, and how many hoops one can move at once. As hula hoops are cheap, you won't have to invest a lot of money if your child wants to expand on this hobby. It's a simple but very effective form of exercise which burns up energy, improves co-ordination, builds up the leg muscles and provides guaranteed fun.

If you're looking for activities for kids which can keep them busy whilst you work, you'll be amazed by how long they can occupy themselves playing with a simple tray of sand or sawdust. Accompanied by the right props, this can be used in a wide range of imaginative games to be played alone or in groups.

Before you introduce activities involving sand or sawdust, make sure you've covered a wide area with old newspaper. Even well behaved children will inevitably end up spilling some of the stuff, so mess is inevitable. Make sure clothes can easily be brushed down and be ready to organize hand-washing when the activities are over. Be attentive to calls of complaint, as, with groups, there's always a risk that wet sand will start to be thrown.

Many children enjoy playing with construction industry toys such as diggers, bulldozers and cement mixtures. Playing with these in sand or sawdust is much better than just pushing them along the floor. It gives them a chance to function as they're supposed to, and children can have great fun using them to build up structures or tear them down again.

With the addition of a little water, and or sawdust can be used to create more solid structures such as small sandcastles. Shaped buckets can make it easier to create elaborate designs. You can ornament these with shells or pebbles taken from the beach.

Ordinary household objects such as toilet roll middles and pieces of plastic bottle can be used to create tunnels, tubes and slopes for sand and sawdust based games. In fact, this type of substrate offers so many different activities for kids that they can amuse themselves with it for whole afternoons, learning skills they'll be able to put to good use when they grow up.

One of the most popular approaches to children's birthday parties is fancy dress, but it can be a difficult thing to organize. If you're holding a fancy dress party for your child, how can you make sure that it goes well and everyone involved has a good time?

Most fancy dress parties have themes. It's possible to run them without, but many children (and even some parents) will have difficulty coming up with costume ideas without that bit of extra prompting. Themes encourage people to be more creative. However, not every good party theme works for fancy dress. It's easy to dress up as a fairy tale character or a pirate, but harder to dress up in a fun way for a inflatables or racing car theme. Inevitably, some children arrive at fancy dress parties without costumes, often because their parents simply haven't been willing to help them. To avoid these children feeling left out, and to avoid diluting the party theme, try to have some simple costumes available for them to borrow. These can include things like cardboard masks and paper hats which are easy to make and cost next to nothing. Face paints also help children to be creative with last-minute costumes.

If there's one activity which young children can be guaranteed to enjoy, it's bouncing. With naturally flexible bodies and springy muscles, they like nothing more than to leap up and down when they're excited - but we adults, in our endlessly confusing way, are always telling them to stop. Don't bounce on the couch or on your bed - you might break it! Don't bounce in the kitchen when I'm trying to cook!

Don't bounce in puddles! It's a confusing message because it seems to them that they're being told not to be physical - when, at the same time, we claim we want them to be fit.

Letting kids get fit by doing what's natural for them doesn't have to mean letting them break every piece of furniture in the house or soak you whenever it's raining. If you take your children to a gymnasium, or even to a fete, you may well find opportunities for them to bounce in an environment designed for the purpose.

Inflatable castles are always the most popular thing at the funfair and they enhance fitness for kids at the same time as tiring them out, making life easier for their parents. Trampolines, if properly supervised, can also provide a great outlet for all that youthful energy. And trampolines don't have to be just for the gym.

Because manufacturers understand how bouncing can help with fitness for kids, it's now possible to get miniature trampolines which can be used in your own back garden,or even in a high ceilinged room in your house. With specially covered springs, these trampolines are much safer for children and provide an excellent way for them to use up excess energy.

Encourage them to bring friends round to join in so that they don't get bored of playing with it, and the trampoline will become a favorite toy which will enjoy many years of use. It'll help your kids to get fit on their own terms, in a way which never ceases to be fun.

Throwing a surprise party for an adult can be difficult, but when a child is involved it's really quite an art. Yet surprise children's birthday parties can be worth the effort. Done right, they'll be among your kids' fondest memories of childhood. A birthday is the most exciting event of a child's year, and a surprise party just makes it more so.

The first difficulty you'll encounter in planning a surprise party for your child is that your child will expect a party of some sort. Obviously you won't want to leave them upset and disappointed for weeks, thinking that nothing is going to happen. For this reason, it's best to arrange an alternative special event. Ideally, this will get your child out of the house, leaving you with time to prepare and get everybody there.

A trip to the zoo, to a sporting event or to the cinema, perhaps in the company of a best friend, can keep your child happy for a couple of hours without exhausting them - because after all, they'll need to have some energy left over.

Telling your child's friends that they're invited to a secret party is, unfortunately, right out. Excited children can't be expected to keep quiet about such things. For this reason, you'll need to plan the event not with them but with their parents, who can tell them on the day after your child is out of the way.

Your child's school may be able to help you make contact with the parents if you don't already know them, as well as advising you on any close friends your child may have whom you haven't yet met. Children are usually uninterested in what adults have to say to each other, but be careful about making phone calls from the house where you may be overheard.

A surprise party needs to have a proper impact, so make sure that everyone has plenty of warning as your child arrives home, and that everyone is ready to jump out and shout "Surprise!" You should have a birthday cake ready and games about to begin so that the fun can take off right away.

Surprise children's birthday parties can be difficult to put together, but they're worth the effort. They'll give your child a truly special day.

Everyone knows that looking after kids is hard work, and often parents feel grateful when their children confess that they're feeling tired and can be sent to bed. To adults, trying to get important things done, children can seem as if they have far too much energy already, never mind trying to get them fitter. But in this situation, properly organized children's exercise is sometimes exactly what's needed.

Children get more excitable than adults because their growing bodies metabolize their food differently, and because many foods aimed at kids are high in sugar content. Children also don't have the same number of daily tasks to tire them out as adults do, and they're not mentally equipped to occupy themselves that way. What they need is physical activity, and lots of it.

They'll instinctively try to get this any way they can, which means running around the house and shouting if they can't find any other outlet. When this happens, simply telling them to sit and be quiet is not a good solution. ~it can be bad for their health, and it can lead to serious stress.

What children need is well planned regular exercise, ideally in the form of activities they're going to enjoy. School sports can help with this, as can active pursuits run by youth organizations. If you need to organize children's exercise yourself, set them tasks to do like running errands on their feet or on bikes.

Encourage them to take up activities such as dancing to their favorite music in their bedrooms. You can even get involved directly by taking the time to play with them with a ball in the back yard. It doesn't have to take up an enormous amount if time, and though children will always burn off more energy doing this sort of thing than adults do, it might even get you fitter yourself!

It's never easy to plan for a child's birthday party, but it becomes even more difficult when you have multiple age groups to consider. Children of large families may have brothers and sisters or cousins attending, some of whom may bring friends of their own. With younger children, where even small age gaps can make a big difference, your child's own close friends may vary sufficiently in age to have very different needs. How can you cater for children of different ages at one event?

The answer is two fold. Firstly, you should look for the things which children of all ages enjoy. Food is a good place to start - it doesn't often become stigmatized as babyish, and if you find that some girls protest they're worried about their weight you can assure them that special occasions like parties mean it's okay to enjoy treats. Games involving physical skills like balance and dexterity can also be a good way to cross the age divide, and team games mean that you can spread out any advantage that might be enjoyed by the older ones.

Secondly, you can make sure older children don't get bored at birthday parties by encouraging them to take some responsibility for the younger ones. Talk to them and let them know some of your worries. Don't give them chores which will spoil the party atmosphere for the, but do give them the chance to volunteer. This will make them feel that they're respected for the more mature qualities they value. Let them contribute to the direction of the party, for instance by getting them to help with choosing music.

At a mixed ages party, it's all the more important to have some quiet space for kids who're finding it all a bit too much. This is important for small children who may need naps and also for older ones who may need some private space to reassert themselves. Having another available activity, such as a computer game, can give them a valuable chance to escape for a bit.

Running mixed ages parties can be hard work, but by taking the time to consider different children's needs you can be sure of still putting on a successful event.

Whether it's a private pool or a community facility, on hot days there's no better place to be than in the water! Kids, too, love swimming related activities, but they often run out of steam because they can't think of many different ways to amuse themselves. Most of them find that swimming laps soon becomes boring, and they have difficulty understanding why adults are content just to lie around at the poolside.

Water based activities for kids can be a great way to keep them fit. They're a good option on days when it's too hot for other forms of exercise, and indoor pools provide somewhere to go when it's too rainy or snowy for playing outside. But like many
kid's activities, they work better when props are supplied.

A simple inflatable ball can be used for simple games of throw and catch or, with older children, for water polo. It'll encourage children to swim fast and to propel themselves out of the water, building muscle and improving aerobic fitness. Unlike other muscle-building exercises, swimming is very gentle and doesn't carry the risk of distorting young limbs. It's also the only sport which helps to tone muscles across the whole of the body.

For younger children especially, inflatable toys are a great favorite in the pool. Inflatable animals such as sharks and crocodiles can be used in imaginative play or for chasing games. Larger inflatables such as rafts can teach kids useful balancing skills as they try to climb on top of them and stay afloat.

Inflatable weapons can be used for fighting games where children get to act out rivalries in an exhilarating way without the risk of anyone getting hurt. These sorts of activities for kids will quickly exhaust even the fittest ones, but they'll always be eager to come back for more. Rather than struggling to persuade them to exercise, you'll find they can't get enough.

Everybody knows that Children's fitness is important, but making sure your kids get the exercise they need can be easier said than done. It's all very well if you live in a good area with good quality local sports facilities, or even a decent sized back yard where they can play with their friends - but what if you live downtown and are uncomfortable about letting them play outside?

What if they have pollen allergies and outdoor play makes them ill? What if you simply don't get the weather for it? Fortunately, there are several indoor activities which can help with fitness for kids, and which can be fun at the same time.

When exercising indoors, staircases are your friend. Even communal stone staircases can help, though in those cases it's a good idea for young children to have an adult present in case they fall. Climbing up and down steps provides light impact exercise which helps to build strong bones, as well as exercising the heart and lungs and strengthening the muscles in the backs of the legs.

The safest way to exercise on staircases is to walk down them and then race upwards, competing with other children or trying to beat a set time. Even slow stair climbing, if undertaken regularly, will improve fitness for kids. This is also a great way to tire them out and keep them from tiring you out when you're trying to get on with the housework.

Jumping and stretching exercises can be performed anywhere, even if you only have a small amount of space. Kids find these more satisfying if they get to perform them in unison with their favorite music, with or without the aid of dance mat technology. They also respond well to challenges - try betting them that they can't manage a certain number of star jumps, and let them try to prove you wrong.

If you have a bit more space, forward and backward rolls are an activity which kids always enjoy. These help to keep joints flexible as well as improving balance. Encourage your kids to combine them with stretches and jumps to create routines. These can easily be built into games.


Fitness for kids doesn't have to be the preserve of those who already enjoy advantages in life. Don't let circumstances deter you from keeping your children healthy, because that's the very best advantage you can give them in life.

Children's birthday parties are the biggest events of kids' years. One of the things they look forward to most is the food. If you're organizing a party for your child, it's vital to get the catering right. But how can you be sure of doing so?

As every parent knows, catering for one child can be difficult enough. Kids are notoriously fussy and will turn down food based on color, shape or association even if they don't object to the taste. At a birthday party where everybody is supposed to be having fun you can't very well sit them down and order them to finish their food before they leave the table. So what can you do?

The key is variety. You'll need to have lots of different types of food and, where possible, variations on each type. Jam tarts can be made in different flavors. Small cakes can be made with different colored icing. Gingerbread can be cut into different shapes - animal or vehicle shapes are usually popular.

Sandwiches for children's birthday parties should be as simple as possible. Use white bread and don't combine fillings, as this is more likely to raise objections. It's a good idea to avoid peanut butter sandwiches (and other nut based dishes) altogether, as nut allergies are increasingly common among children these days and can be caused by something as simple as a vulnerable child holding hands with one who has been eating nuts. Ask parents beforehand to find out if there are any other allergy issues you should know about.

Sandwiches served to children should be cut from quarter slices of bread so that they're appealingly bite sized. Try to apply this rule to all the food you serve. Larger items can look intimidating to children and often mean that they don't eat as much altogether. Try to serve plenty of interesting savory options (hedgehogs made with bits of cheese on cocktail sticks stuck into oranges remain a favorite) to discourage them from eating so much sugary food that they become hyperactive.

It seems that everywhere you look there are activities offered to our children for fun video games or a new cartoon series on television. The sad fact is that these activities lead our children down a path that can lead them to a sedentary adult lifestyle. As parents we only want the best things possible for our kids, and this is why we need to understand why fitness is so important for our children. Here are some startling facts about childhood obesity in the United States alone.

There is an annual National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey that is completed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that read off numbers stating that one-third of the children in the U.S. are overweight or well on their way to being overweight. Break this number down even more it shows a devastating twenty-five million U.S. children are overweight. Another study from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation showed that children from the age of two through the age of nineteen are at a seventeen point one percentage of being obese. If these numbers are not enough to get our attention let’s discuss what effect our children may suffer due to childhood obesity.

For those children who are obese they can unfortunately suffer many consequences from this. First let’s explain what obese means. Obese is the term used to describe any person who is carrying a much higher percentage of body fat than what is healthy for proper bodily function. Due to obesity our children can suffer from what are usually adult related health concerns such as Diabetes, High Blood Pressure and High Cholesterol. These are health concerns that lower the quality of life for any person who struggles with them. Our children have so many concerns in this world and obesity related diseases should not be a concern for them. So how do we prevent childhood obesity?

Exercise and a healthy diet are the true treatment for childhood obesity. Our children need to have limited time on the computer and more time outdoors kicking a ball around. When throwing a child's birthday party you first have two choices for location: at home or out of the home. If you choose outside the home you are then given several other choices. Three of the favorite locations to celebrate at are a local park, a children’s play place or a children’s gymnasium. Each of these locations offers a fun time that will be sure to make a great birthday memory.

The first location mentioned is a local park. If weather permits this is a simple and classic choice. You contact your local parks and recreation department to reserve a picnic area or shelter. Once you have this under your belt you will want to gather your decorations for the area.

Throw up a few balloons and streamers and you are ready for the party. Children can have cake at the picnic tables and once food and gifts are finished the kids can enjoy the playground equipment. You get free entertainment! Clean up is also a breeze. Throw away all of your trash in the containers provided by the park. This is a great choice, but so are our next two locations.

A children’s play place is usually requested for at least one birthday party. You call ahead and give the number of guests and pay a deposit to hold your reservation. You supply the birthday cake but the play place usually decorates the table and supplies hats and usually pizza. Kids can enjoy games and play equipment after the birthday cake and gift giving. This is usually a popular choice but can be more expensive than our first choice.

Our last choice and often the most unique are reserving a birthday bash at a local children’s gymnasium franchise. You call ahead set up the reservation, and a deposit may or may not be required depending on the company. Once again in most cases you supply the cake, but some companies go the extra mile and supply it all.

Children get to enjoy cake and gift giving and then get to explore gymnasium equipment, with staff supervision of course. This can be a great way for kids to enjoy a new experience.

Each choice for your child's birthday celebration is fun and exciting. You can’t go wrong with any of these choices. After all birthdays do come each year so why not try each location.

With the change of seasons and the weather children are forced to change which activities they are involved in. If they play outdoor sports they are then forced inside with the rain and snow. If the heat of summer meets record highs children are forced inside to cool down. Some of the indoor activities they are forced to choose are not very healthy.

Such activities include video games, extended Internet use and too mush television watching. Some of the more positive activities our children can be involved in all year around include gymnastics, ice-skating and dance classes.

Being able to participate in a year round activity that is both healthy physically and mentally is so important for kids. The three activities listed above fulfill this. Each of these activities are available in almost any town or city.

There is really only one key to throwing a fun children's birthday party "think like a kid".

If you think about what you or I enjoyed as kids, I'm sure one of the first things that comes to mind is candy! This one word seems to make the world go round for kids.

Second thought we have is usually fun! Games, toys and anything that makes you smile.

Third, you might go back to candy. Sometimes as adults we try too hard to make our children's birthdays into a fancy swanky event when we don't have to.

Keep the next tips in mind and you are sure to have a fun and memorable party for your kids.

Number one is to get them involved. Unless it's a surprise birthday party, kids should be involved. They will love to participate any way they can. Let them choose a theme. You may be surprised what they come up with. Pirates, princesses and jungle exploration oh my!

If your child is creative or just loves to draw and paint, let them help make their own party decoration. Use cardboard, poster board, fabric and anything that they find interesting to make their decorations. How excited they will be to say "made that".

Number two is to let them invite whom they want to the party. If fifty invitations are passed out, do your best to be prepared. Remember this does not have to be extravagant. Make small gift bags that include candy and a party horn or some colorful stickers.

If cake prices seem to be a bit too much, cupcakes are a fun alternative. You can even let the kids decorate a cupcake with different topping choices like nuts or sprinkles. It may be messy, but the fun the kids have make it all worth it.

Just because you invite and prepare for a full house, doesn't mean that will be what turns out, which can be good or bad, depending how you choose to take it.

Number three is the charm. Be sure to include some fun activities. Create a beanbag toss out of cardboard, beans and fabric. Play musical chairs or pin the tail on the donkey. These games are classics and always please a crowd of kids.

It seems each year more activities are being created that allows our children to lead sedentary lives. Computer games and chat rooms online, keep our children seated for hours on end. Video games pull our kids into a gripping world of excitement, yet our children sit motionless.

Television has become less entertainment and more escape. With all of these activities can easily take over and lead to an unhealthy lifestyle. It can often be a struggle to get the kids out and into the sunshine and fresh air. There is hope still. There are five great activities to get our kids into that allow the fun they crave and the exercise their growing bodies need.

These five activities include gymnastics, ice-skating, children's golf, swimming and biking. Each of these activities is fun to participate in and it is a healthy addition to the lives of our children. These activities are also likely to be affordable, easily available and build your child up physically and emotionally.

We all know that it is important for us to get enough exercise in our lives and the same rule applies to our children. Children also need fitness to be included in their young lives. For most adults we choose to run out to our local gym or take up jogging.

We know where we can go, what we can do to include exercise in our lives, but where and what exercise is for our children. There are three things to keep in mind with children’s exercise, Fun, Safety, and Effectiveness. Here are the do's and don'ts that go along with each of these.

Fun is key to keeping a child interested in any thing from school, chores and exercise. If a child is not enjoying themselves, unlike and adult, children will not push themselves to participate in an un-enjoyable activity. If your child tells you that he or she no longer wants to play soccer since it’s not fun, what should you do?

Do ask your child why it’s not enjoyable, since it may be resolved.

Don't push them to continue the sport if your child really is unhappy with it. Allow your child to try an activity for a trial period and if her or she doesn't enjoy it try something different. If they enjoy the exercise related activity they will stick to it. If not your child will be ready to kiss that sport or activity good-bye.

We hear it and say "Safety first". And it is very important no matter the exercise children involve themselves in. If it were a sport such as football you wouldn't send them out to play without their padded equipment. If your child were participating in gymnastics at a local children's gymnasium franchise, you wouldn't just let them up on a balance beam alone with an unpadded surface beneath them.

We have to be sure that exercise is safe so that the exercise is not only fun but is in no way a danger to the child. Do make sure your child wears protective gear and follows all safety rules with their exercise activity.

Don't let them talk their way out of protective gear or safety. If your friends don't think your helmet is cool so be it. Your friends can't think anything is cool if they were injured due to being unsafe.

Lastly exercise should be effective. A child does not have to spend hours on an elliptical machine or lift free weights for a half an hour. These activities are effective for adults but can be harmful to children. With the way the body is growing and changing in a youth weight training is not recommended.

Children should just have fun running around and expelling energy. Sports, swimming, hiking and biking are all exercise related activities that are all of the above, fun, safe and effective. Do encourage your children to try new exercise activities and do cheer them on with their choice.

Don't pressure your child to do an activity just because you think it is a good choice. Keep this in mind and you and your child will be both happy and healthy.

In the world we live in with video games, television and the Internet our children are too often left sitting motionless for hours on end. We know that it’s important for them to get a healthy amount of activity in their lives. We often think of how it is important physically but did you consider how children's activities could be healthy mentally as well?

Studies have shown that children who participate in sports or other related activities have a higher rate of doing well in school. These children also have a lower percentage of falling to peer pressure such as drugs, alcohol and sex.

The studies behind this show that children who are involved in sports, theater, gymnastics and other activities improve children’s social skills, and self-confidence.

Theses activities often teach children how to deal with winning and losing in a healthy manner. They also show children how to support each other as a team. Leadership, kindness, perseverance are all-important aspects of our lives and our children can be taught this as they laugh and smile.

Physically these activities work our children’s bodies to allow them to grow h=in a healthy way. It is a shame that here in the U.S. seventeen point one percent of children ages two through nineteen are overweight. A study showed that twenty-five million children in our country are obese.

This sad fact contains children who struggle with adult related health conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure. An hour a day of physical activity is all that is required for health. Your child can walk their dog or kick a ball around the yard and work their way to a healthy adulthood. It’s very simple for our youth to get the physical activity they need.

With this said it is in our hands as parents, teachers and fellow community citizens to put the word out how important children's activities are. Let’s all work together to keep our children both physically and mentally strong and fit.

If there's one thing which children universally enjoy, it's a challenge. That's the reason why they spend so much time in front of computer games. When we think of children in days gone by, we imagine them running around, jumping and tumbling and laughing with pleasure at it. When we look at our kids today, we're more likely to see them slumped in front of the TV or computer, overweight and unhappy about it. How has this happened?

More importantly, how can we help them to turn it around? The importance of children's fitness cannot be overestimated - it's essential to establishing the patterns they'll follow for the rest of their lives.

Why aren't children interested in exercise any more? Part of the problem is that the modern adult culture surrounding fitness has made it all too formal. In order to be appealing, children's fitness has to center on having fun. It has to be silly and amusing like the TV; it has to present challenges like the computer games.

Telling a child to undertake repetitive exercise on a fitness machine won't work. Children's fitness should be an entertaining, sociable activity with the reward of immediate positive attention.

One of the best ways to promote your children's fitness is to encourage them to play outdoors with other children, but not all children take to this. Some fin it difficult to form friendships or feel shy about engaging in physical activity with their peers if they're initially unfit and expect o be bad at it.

The best way to help with children's fitness in these cases is to provide the social element yourself.
