Your kids may have a ton of reasons NOT to exercise. If you are determined to make children's exercise part of your kid's lives, here are some ways to combat their excuses not to exercise:
Children’s exercise excuse #1: The other kids don't have to. You could always counter this by responding the way our parents did: if the other kids jumped off a bridge would you jump off the bridge, too? Now, I got really tired of hearing this statement and your kids probably will also so how about another approach? Talk to your kids about the benefits of exercise and even better; lead by example.
Children's exercise excuse #2: I am too busy. If this is the excuse your kids use, have them make a timeline of the way they spend their time for a week. Go over the timeline together and see if there are a few hours that could be spent exercising.
Children's exercise excuse #3: I don't like to exercise. Are they sure? What do they consider exercise? Talk about the different ways they could be more physical. Suggest they invite a friend to join them. Running, riding a bike, swimming and playing ball are all ways to get exercise.
Children's exercise excuse #4: I'm too tired. One of the reasons your child might be tired is lack of exercise. Many children have become very inactive and spend far more time watching television or playing video games than they do engaged in physical activity. Not only may a little exercise give them more energy it may also help your kids get a good nights sleep which will help alleviate the persistent tired feeling.
Children's exercise excuse #5: Exercise is not fun. Maybe doing 50 sit-ups, 100 toe touches and 25 push-ups is not fun but there are lots of other ways to exercise. Consider membership at a kids gym. A kids gym stresses exercise and fun. Children will have many different choices and can find a class that really appeals to them. They will be part of a class that has other kids of their age and ability.
You will have a better time convincing your kids that children's exercise is a good idea if you follow these tips. When your kids give you any of the above excuses you will be prepared and ready to steer them in the right direction.
