Children love to exercise. Have you ever watched your kids exercise? There is no doubt about it that a child - given the choice - will much rather play in the backyard or on the playground than simply lounge in front of a television set or sit quietly on a chair in a classroom. Yet with the advent of better and more challenging video games, some children have actually managed to train themselves to sit still for long periods of time. Some children have actually managed to remain rooted in one spot - except for the occasional bathroom break - for more than six hours.
Add to this the way in which children positively love to inhale junk food, and you have a mix for disaster, namely childhood obesity and all its adjunct problems. Your kids might still love to exercise, but now they have found electronic friends who are doing the workout for them.
Do your kids exercise in such a manner? If so, you may want to consider pulling the plug and making the outdoors more attractive again. Sure, your kids may not rise to the occasion right away and instead you may encounter a lot of whining, complaining, and even downright petulance. Yet, keeping in mind who is in charge at home - you the parent - and also remembering who is deciding at the store whether or not to purchase another video game, it becomes clear that if your children need a gentle nudge to excercise, it is up to you to make it happen.
