Sometimes when we have children we get really caught up in all kinds of children's activities but forget how important exercise and movement is. It is a great thing to have kids involved in music, art and drama. It is also good for the kids to have time with family and friends but we are becoming a culture of people who are rather sedentary.
There are ways to incorporate exercise and movement into children's activities. If you are clever they may not even know that you are adding a little exercise to their regular activities. When you go to the grocery store or to run errands, park a little farther away than usual. This gives everyone the chance to walk a few extra steps.
Instead of turning on the television after supper suggest a walk with the dog or a race around the block. Make exercise fun! Get out the dusty bikes or rollerblades.
Next time the weekend rolls around visit the zoo or a museum. These activities involve walking as well as having fun.
When the kids have friends over plan some outside children's activities. Have a scavenger hunt or play football or soccer. Go to the park and take along a Frisbee or the tennis rackets.
Let the kids see you involved in activities that involve exercise. Garden, join a walking club or take up swimming. The entire family can join a gym where everyone can participate in exercise classes.
You can combine children's activities with everyday routines and the whole family can have fun and shape up at the same time.
